The unsung mountain destination, Kerala

Something about Kerala evokes the images of sun, sand and sea in the mind.  Maybe it is not far from the truth.  With it’s pristine beaches, miles and miles of backwaters and endless lagoons, it is not difficult to imagine Kerala as a seaside tourist destination.

The real beauty of Kerala lies not in its beaches but in the amazing flora and fauna the land has to offer.  Blessed with amazing weather most of the year round, it offers a variety of landscape which is breathtakingly fresh.  As you approach Kerala, the place starts off with massive barriers commonly known as the Western Ghats.  This impressive mountain range starts from the northern tip of Kerala and continues all the way south.  These majestic mountains rise to an impressive height before they slope down to the inner side of the state. Not very far away from the foothills inside of the state, one is transported to the backwaters and beaches of this God blessed land.

Kerala has an impressive set of mountain destinations which are well preserved in their natural beauty.  Starting from Wayanad in the north to Munnar in the central districts, the hills are dotted with small hamlets and towns. Each small settlement is concentrated around impressive tea gardens once owned by the British Empire.

The weather is pleasant most of the year round.  The good times to visit are in summer when the rest of the country is being baked alive. The mountain side offers a welcome relief from the sweltering heat. The mountain air and green cover does a lot of good to the soul.  Avoid visiting during the monsoons as it is quite damp and cold. Although the monsoon bring out the best in the mountains with their lush green carpet spreading all over, it is very uncomfortable to stay for extended periods of time.  A day or two at best will bring out the charm of the monsoons.   Winters are pretty cold on the mountain tops.  The temperature drops quite a bit and one can feel the chill in their bones. Warm clothing does help to some extent but it is rarely adequate to beat the cold.

The biggest reason to visit Kerala’s mountain side is to enjoy nature at its finest.  Do not worry about what locations are to be seen, spots which need to be visited, photographs to be taken, forget all the regular tourist fare.  Just go there to stay in paradise, enjoy the pleasant weather and give your soul a treat.  Walk around lazily, drive around the mountains, visit tea gardens, hang around small markets in towns, in short, just take life easy.  At the end of it, you will realize how fulfilled your soul feels.

2012, the “true” year of the tablets

The year 2011 clearly belonged to Apple. Whether it was the launch of the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or the sad demise of it’s iconic founder, Steve Jobs, Apple was in the lime light. Sales were good and once the year is out, it will confirm that Apple will have a fair share of the market. Is this trend going to continue?

Google has been hot on the heels of Apple with it’s own offerings. Google, with it’s open source, has a number of vendors to work with. Samsung and Amazon leading a pack of eager players to grab a share of the ever expanding tablet market. This certainly has given Google the reach it needs. Amazon has been the joker in the pack with the unexpected success of it’s Kindle Fire. Priced very competitively, it has been a hot favorite in the “Black Friday” sales in the US, not to mention the rest of the world. The coming year, 2012, looks to be set to be Google’s to take.

One player who could take some of the edge away could be Microsoft, the dark horse in this race. The Redmond giant is keeping up with the rest with the expected launch of it’s Windows 8 platform. It is expected to seamlessly integrate the PC/Laptop world to the Tablets and Smartphones in a way that is not seen before. The launch, expected in the first quarter of 2012, would surely up the ante in the already crowding space.

So, where does this leave Apple? Apple has always been a market changer rather than a mass player. That, of course, was largely due to Steve Jobs who had the vision and courage to make his ideas feasible market realities. Will Apple continue in the same vein in his absence? Market analysts don’t think so. The general feel is that Apple will slowly lose it’s edge over the next 2-3 years. That is a long time and anything could happen. It would be a loss to the market if Apple were to fade away. Then again, Jobs vision of taking on the TV world and bringing it to the Apple platform is already “Research in Action”. It could be a game changer if it is accepted by the content hungry masses. It has already announced it’s intention to make this work by halving it’s advertising costs on iAd. A move which should be welcomed by the content and app providers.

The big disappointments in this market have been Nokia, Sony Ericsson and RIM. All three had a market share which could have been exploited better had they got their act together and strategy right. Nokia, after it’s disastrous 2011, is now getting on to the Windows 8 platform. Will it work for them? Sony has chosen to go the Android way. Once again, interesting to see this Japanese-Norwegian combo try and get back into contention. RIM, what with it’s servers acting up and the later goof up by offer only select customers sops, is in for a rough ride. It is not clear how this Canadian giant will perform in the coming year. Not too much hope rests on them as of now.

So, how will 2012 pan out? Markets, if they could be predicted right, would take away the fun from the anticipation and excitement of the wait. Betting on any one player or technology would be disastrous. This, of course, poses a major headache to the content providers. They have to make sure that they have availability on multiple platforms which increases their costs considerably. Where does this leave the good old PC / Laptop market? It will probably continue to grow, maybe in single digits, somewhere at the rear end of this exciting market. Undoubtedly, the players are set to cater to the varied needs of the markets. Exciting times ahead for the consumer who will be spoilt for choice. All in all, the tidings look good. In the end, the consumer is king and is set up for a roller coaster ride.

Google Plus spread…

It looks like Google finally hit it right with the social networking world. Google + seems to have all the right kind of reviews which could make it successful. I really like the approach that they have taken to launch it. Start it off with a select few reviews who could influence the outcome before launching it to the general public. This is how they launched their Gmail service. It was an instant success.

This time around Google had to taste a lot of failure before they came up with a good product (atleast it sounds good from the reviews so far). Now, taking social networking to it’s next level is what was really needed. Facebook is getting more and more complex to use. Twitter is useful and fun but has a lot of limitations. Hopefully, Google + will be able to address user needs better.

Google now needs to look ahead. Social networking needs to mature. So, what are we talking about here? Sure, they have all the new Circles, Sparks and Hangouts. But is it all? Ability to connect easily to people and work with groups doesn’t alone qualify for maturity. Using it only for leisure does not excite anymore. Google should look at a larger picture of what LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook can offer but offer it in one place. If this is accomplished, Google would have achieved the first step to next level of social networking. From there, allowing it to evolve into something more meaningful would not be difficult. It may not be easy to visualize it right away.

Good work, Google. It looks like we can expect a lot more from you….

Books and buildings…..

A truly great book should be read in youth, again in maturity and once more in old age, as a fine building should be seen by morning light, at noon and by moonlight.

“Papa” John Wakefield no more….

“Ashes to ashes, dust to dust….” goes the quote from the Bible. There is no escaping it for it is the cycle of life. This was true in the case of “Papa” John Wakefield who passed away on the 27th of April, 2010. I had just got back from a trip from Bahrain the same day when I got a call from my friend, Vinay, who told me about it. For a minute I did not get it but then I realized that he was referring to John Wakefield of Kabini. I am not sure many of you would have heard of him.

Col. John Wakefield, popularly known as “Papa”, was the son of a manager of the Maharaja of Tikarey in Bihar. He spent his life in India and loved the country as his own. After having served in the army, he was invited by the Chief Minister of Karnataka to set up the first Jungle Lodge at Nagarhole in Karnataka. He was at that time a representative member of Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge, a tiger reserve in Nepal. This plan was not to materialize as Nagarhole was converted to a national park and hence they could not get permission to set up the lodge there. Instead, the erstwhile hunting lodge of the Maharaja of Mysore at Karapur, known as the Kabini River Lodge, was developed as a joint venture of the Government of Karnataka and Tiger Tops.

“Papa” fell in love with Kabini. He could not get enough of the place. He spent more than 30 years of his life there. When he first came there, elephants were a menace to the local farmers. During their migration for food and water, they would cross the human settlements in herds and destroy all the crop and settlements. The locals would try and fight the elephants and wind up losing crop and their lives in the bargain. “Papa” worked very closely with the Government of Karnataka to help preserve this delicate balance. He devised a plan which would have an artificial lake directly in the path of migration of the elephants. This way, the elephants would be forced to go around the lake, an argument which found favor with the Government. They funded the project and “Papa” was instrumental in getting it implemented. Years after it was done, the residents of Kabini forgot what a menace the elephants were. In fact, now the locals respect the animals once again.

It took the effort of just one selfless individual who loved the land and what it represented. He saw the system as a whole and with his loving thoughts of wanting to preserve both the settlers and the wild animals came up with the ingenious plan of saving them both.

Today, thanks to “Papa”, Kabini is one of the most wonderful places to visit. It has been ranked as the 5th best wildlife resort in the world. All this thanks largely to one man “Papa” and a very understanding Government of Karnataka.

I took a few moments to thank this man for all the wonder he created in Kabini when I heard about his demise. I wish all of you who read this do the same. Not because it would make me feel good but it would help his soul rest in peace. One of the things he fought for in the last few years of his life was to ensure that commercial tourism did not come to Kabini. This has helped Kabini preserve it wonderful natural ways. I am only saddened that I could not meet him once again to listen to his wonderful storytelling about the Kabini jungles. May his soul rest in peace and may his ideals remain intact with Kabini…

Nice holiday location..

I first went to Kabini about 5 years ago in 2005. It was love at first sight. The whole place had a nice welcome feeling to it. As we were driving to Kabini, it was like Kabini was beckoning and we were being asked to come into it’s loving arms. The place has a rustic rural look to it. There are a couple of places where you can stay. The more popular one is The Jungle Lodges run by the Karnataka Tourism board. There are a few private lodges where you could stay. We stayed at The Jungle Lodges during our first trip. In a subsequent trip, we did try out The Water Woods. Much as you worry about the place when we go on a holiday, both places were hassle free and enjoyable.
The staff at The Jungle Lodges are very courteous and friendly. The schedule laid out is so convenient that it takes out the hassle of decision making from your end. You just go with the schedule and you enjoy the trip. A truly relaxing time. The jungles around Kabini are amazing and you really get your time’s worth on a trip. If you get lucky, you get to spot tigers and bears. If not, elephants, bison and deer are found in plenty. Apart from the monkeys, birds and a host of other animals.
A must do trip for a couple of days of proper relaxation…
Do check out their site for more information. I will be posting more details shortly….

IPL Fever

The IPL fever is back in India.   This year’s event has generated a different kind of an interest also. Having turned this into a mega event and having built this into a massive brand, Lalit Modi is now encashing on it’s image.  Two new franchisees at $703 million, this amount being more than all the 8 franchisees fees in the inaugural year.  To make it interesting, all the franchisees will have to renew all the contracts of their players next year.  This means fresh auctions next year, fresh bids, fresh money…
